What are Amethyst’s qualities and benefits?
Rich colour
Amethyst is a gemstone from the quartz family that comes in shades of purple, from pastel lilac to deep royal violet. Its purple colour comes from naturally forming iron and the intensity of colour can depend on many factors including the location where the Amethyst is mined from and the amount of light the stone has been exposed to during formation and after.
Durable and ideal for everyday wear
On the Mohs scale, Amethyst has a rating of 7 which means it’s hard wearing enough to be set in beautiful jewellery. It is a durable and scratch-resistant stone, making it a great choice for everyday wear.
Affordable yet regal
Despite their rich history and luxurious royal connection, Amethysts are still a very affordable gemstone today. Particularly when comparing them to other purple gemstones like Tanzanite. Meaning you can buy your February sweetheart a personalised piece of jewellery, without breaking the bank.
What does Amethyst symbolise?

The history of Amethysts and where they come from
Amethysts in History
Originally worn in jewellery in Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, the word Amethyst has Ancient Greek origins. In Greek Mythology, the first Amethyst was said to have formed when the god of wine Dionysus poured his wine on a young maiden who had been turned to quartz to protect her from his wrath - staining the stone purple. Because of the association with Dionysus, the people of Ancient Greece believed wearing an Amethyst would prevent them from getting drunk or from being too intoxicated and instil a sober and serious mind.
In Ancient Egypt, the stone was worn as an amulet by Pharaohs and high priests as a sign of power and wisdom and throughout history, Amethysts were often associated with royalty. In Medieval times, Amethysts were commonly incorporated into crown jewels, and are still a feature in much of the royal collection.
Where do Amethysts come from?
Many of the Amethysts mined today originate from South America, particularly Brazil and Uruguay. Although this is not the only location where they are found, they can also be mined from Africa, Spain, Russia, Canada , India, Sri Lanka and the United States.
