What are layered necklaces?

Layered necklaces are multiple necklaces that are worn together. Typically, they are individual necklaces varying in style and length – although they can come joined together as a set. Stacking necklaces is a key trend that is still going strong and can help elevate your wardrobe to achieve effortless glamour.

Although it looks simple enough, it can be challenging to know where to start. Follow our easy guide to help you achieve this key trend all year round.

Take note of what you already have

This seems relatively easy, however the key benefit of taking inventory of what pieces you already have is to evaluate how you currently wear them. You may find some pieces you own have not been worn as often or if your collection is quite large, have not been worn at all. If you have an assortment of stranded pendants and simple chains, you might find that you wear this individually on separate occasions. That’s why knowing how to layer your necklaces can be key for updating your look.

The shortest chain is the foundation

Finding the most flattering necklace length is the foundation of layering necklaces. Once you have your go-to necklace length, you can then layer accordingly. As a general rule, around 2 inches apart is the best way to go if you are layering multiple chains. For a more dramatic look, you can go extremely long with your second chain.

Choose one statement piece

You can always choose one statement necklace, such as a chain of pearls or rhinestones, and make it the centrepiece of your look. This ideally works well as your first or middle chain. Keep any additional stacking necklaces simple to allow the statement necklace to stand-out.

Pendant placement matters

Adding pendants to your layering necklaces is a great way to make use of more personalised jewellery. Necklaces with pendants like lockets, names, initials or zodiac signs can help elevate simple stacking chains. If you are layering three or more necklaces and you wish to add pendants, focus on the top and bottom chains – keeping the middle chain clean and simple. If you are only including one pendant, go for the bottom chain as this allows people the chance to focus on each piece individually.

Select a variety of chain weights

There are many types of necklace chains that vary in weight and thickness. From rope chains, Cuban chains, rolo chains, figaro chains and curb chains – each one can add an element of texture to your layered necklaces. Consider choosing one or two chain styles that are both dainty and chunky to mix up your look.

Try a pop of colour

If your wardrobe palette is mainly monochromatic and neutrals, adding a pop of colour with your jewellery is the quickest way to elevate your look. When it comes to adding in colour, the ‘less is more’ rule applies here. Try adding a single coloured pendant or chain to your otherwise simple stack to allow keep it from looking too busy whilst allowing it to be the main focus point. In terms of placement, the coloured piece should ideally be your shortest chain as it is closest to your face and can highlight your features.

Think about mixing metals

If you’re feeling more daring, consider taking your layered necklaces up a notch by mixing up your metals. This is a more contemporary take on the key trend and involves wearing multiple mixed metal necklaces such as rose gold, silver, and gold, simultaneously. This is a great way of making use of all your current pieces without having to spend money on more jewellery.
