The Lanes: Brighton’s Magic Gem

The Lanes: Brighton’s Magic Gem
/

Part of Brighton and Hove, the infamous historic quarter of Brighton offers The Lanes. Lining the intricate cobbled streets sits a marvel of eclectic boutiques, quirky narrow alleyways, plenty of pubs and cafes to people watch and home to some of the UK’s legendary jewellers.

History of Brighton

Just a short distance from the Royal Pavilion and infamous pebble beach, The Lanes was once at the centre of the old bustling fishing town of Brighthelm-Stone. Located between the South Downs and the sea, The Lanes stretches between Ship Street, North Street and East Street with parts of The Lanes dating back to the late 16th Century.

By the 17th Century, Brighton was seen as more than just a bustling town after being placed on the map as an area of interest due to the belief that sea water had strong medicinal qualities. This grew desirable attention to Brighton beach which further solidified Brighton’s reputation.

As Brighton became re-branded as an upmarket health resort during the mid-18th Century, the new image attracted reputable guests – notoriously, The Prince Regent, George of Wales. This caused Brighton’s popularity to soar rapidly which led to locals diversifying their trades and skills to meet the growing numbers of visitors.

In 1815, The Prince Regent who stayed in the modest Marine Pavilion, commissioned a transformation of the villa to reflect that of an oriental palace. This was to allow George to host larger social gatherings and events as he enjoyed entertaining. Construction of the infamous Royal Pavilion took a number of years and created a vast amount of jobs across Brighton which helped to boost not only Brighton’s popularity, but economy too.

Along with construction above ground was the hustle and bustle of The Lanes, with local fishermen seeking a new profitable trade and income by successfully trying their hands at antiques dealing which extensively grew over the years. By the 1960’s, The Lanes became a well-established antiques dealer community and grew in reputation as a famous hive of activity in the world of antiques.

While few antique stores remain today, The Lanes has evolved into a community of independent jewellers including Shining Diamonds. With plenty to see and do, the picturesque Brighton has still retained it’s charm and attracts visitors from across the world.
